My youtube video….BrissieMaz singing Summertime

Hope you enjoy the video and here’s the link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49EKI34NhSw

Alternatively, go to youtube.com and type in brissiemaz to find it.
I’d be interested to hear what you think about it.

Well, as with everything I do, there were a lot of complications. However, I’m not telling you about any of them (yet) because I’ll be typing for a week and I don’t have the time or inclination right now.

This is a video of my version of the George Gershwin song ‘Summertime’. I recorded a CD at the end of April and this is one of my favourites. Choosing such a song and attempting to make a video in our southern Hemisphere winter was not too bright on my part but we managed – warm tops, jackets and all. My niece Mary did the filming…..so a big thank you to her.

Top 10 fantastic animal pictures by elainemcnulty

Thank you to elainemcnulty for this gorgeous collection of animal photos

I used to be indecisive...

I came across some fabulous pictures via Twitter.  It’s a collection of all sorts of photos, not just animals – some are of the natural world, some animals, some people, some scenery, some man made things, but they are all fantastic in their own way.

I have chosen my Top 10 animal ones (which made me smile), but it was really hard to narrow it down to just ten, so I might have to do a Top Ten Animals part 2 some other time.

Unfortunately the original source of the photos is not often mentioned, but I have credited where I can.

Did you have a favourite?  It’s hard, isn’t it?

Brissiemaz singing ‘Summertime’

If you want to skip my interminable yakking and go straight to Brissiemaz singing ‘Summertime’, scroll down to the end of the post beneath my gorgeous red rose.  I’m shamelessly including a couple of flowers from the Chelsea Flower Show…. who needs an excuse to put such wonderful flowers on display!

Earlier this year I awoke to find that I had apparently lost my voice. It had never happened before and being a singer who still performs in public it came as quite a shock. It happened so suddenly! Being my usual cool, calm and collected self I decided that panicking was the best option and raced off to the doctor to see if my vocal cords could be spared. While I was in the car I was berating myself for not having made a proper recording before this….how stupid to leave it till it was too late!

I was almost in tears by the time I sat down in the waiting room but had calmed down a bit by the time I finally saw the doctor who didn’t have a clue what was going on and gave me  a letter to see a specialist…….the ear, nose and throat guy……but of course there was no appointment available till a few months down the track.  So….what to do?

Next day I woke up with my voice intact.  Maybe it was just a glitch. Who knows? I’m OK today, I think to myself, so no need to panic……….but I’m at an age where my singing voice could go awol at any time.   Again…..what to do?

So I decided on a positive approach and went on the net to find a recording studio that suited my needs and was not too far from home and immediately booked a few days of recording sessions. Then I resolved to get the CD’s done BEFORE I saw the specialist in case he said that under no circumstances should I be singing .

OK…..I know…….sand……burying my head in it. Guilty as charged.

Months of hard work later I have finished the recording and am about to see the specialist after having a few tests.  My voice held up well, I had no pain or discomfort despite doing lots of singing so I’m hoping I’ll get a clean bill of health from him.

Anyways….I do go on, don’t I…..I’m intending to add a song to this post so I need to keep quiet and get on with it.

It’s a modern version of ‘Summertime’ from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin.

Hope you enjoy it……assuming I get things right and you can play it. I’ll also be putting it on You Tube later with a video so, if all else fails, you can hear it there.

I want to enter this in A Word a Week Challenge – Music.                                                         Here’s a link to a wonderful post on the subject by A Word in Your Ear

Heartfelt thanks to BJ from Staraudio with whom I spent many deafening hours in the recording studio.

The wav format wouldn’t upload so I had to go with mp3 and I think the sound is not as warm…….the backing sounds a little thin?  Will keep trying to upload wav.

Can anybody help?

Finally, a post of some sort….but it’s actually a cry for help.  I’ve been relegated to the world of non-bloggers for the best part  of 4 months and now I’m having trouble when I click on the button that displays who has liked or followed my blog etc. …..you know the one I mean….it’s between NewPost and the blog title on the top RHS of the screen. Has something been changed in my absence? Do I have to change some settings? Or has it simply gone on the blink from lack of use. The button is in full colour leading me to believe that there’s info in there to be had but I can’t get it to share with me!!!

I guess I can find the info in my emails but it is taking so long to go through them that I was hoping to use the button as it’s a very useful shortcut. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how I can remedy the situation?

When I click on the button (what’s it called, by the way?)  the drop down box appears and stays blank except for the ‘wait a minute I’m loading that for you now’ thingy that goes round and round for ……..ages…….well, 15 minutes was the longest I tried it for a while ago while I went to get myself a sandwich and a cuppa.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, I’m off to try to discover how to share audio files with you. Say a prayer for me!

Yet another apology!!

Yes, I know. It sounds pathetic but here I go again asking for forgiveness. I’ve had computer security problems which I am assured are a thing of the past……..and I have had no spare time into the bargain.

I had an opprtunity to make some recordings and grabbed the chance with both hands as, at my age this kind of thing doesn’t come along too often. I’m also aware that there’s a time limit on the human voice……it’s beauty definitely decreases as age takes it toll. So, as I said, I made some CD’s while I still could! When I figure out how to, I’ll put some songs on my blog….would love to hear what you think of them.

As well, I’ve just finished training as a Thermomix consultant (= demonstrator) and am looking forward to showing anyone who will listen what a great piece of equipment it is.

I’m still giving a couple of concerts most weeks so there don’t seem to be enough hours in the day any more!

Wonderful to read some of your posts….I see lots of you have been very busy online. Hopefully I will join the ranks again now as I miss the contact with you.

More soon……

29. I should have hired a comfy car!

I was stuck in north-east London on my way back from East Anglia with the traffic at a standstill. Having left Lavenham about 6pm it had taken me just over an hour and a half to reach the A406 which would take me across London, west to east, and deposit me not far from where I was staying. But this prolonged delay caused me to have a re-think. Was this normal peak hour disruption or something more?

I contemplated taking another route but was a bit nervous about getting lost as it was starting to get dark….. then realised it was impossible to head off down another road anyway. I could see only gridlock in all directions.

Finally we crawled to a point where we were diverted from the A406 and up ahead I could see a massive pile-up near an overpass with ambulances and police cars in profusion. I learned the next day that 1 person had been killed and a couple seriously injured. That sort of information helps put waiting in traffic into perspective; at least I was alive and well, if a little tetchy! I had no idea then that some poor folk wouldn’t make it home that night – one of them, not ever.

Naturally, the diverted traffic travelled even more slowly as the unfamiliar road we were now on was narrower. Eventually, at….wait for it…10 pm, I decided I’d had enough – I was getting cramps in my legs. I found a place to pull over (wonders will never cease) – on the other side of the road mind you and it took me ages to get across there – outside a college with extra parking spaces for students. All of these students were sensibly at the local pub or tucked up in bed. So I’d hit the jackpot parking-wise……..the only exception to my THERE’S NEVER ANYWHERE TO PULL OVER! rant. Far be it from me to look a gift horse in the mouth but I wished the lighting had been a bit better. I had decided to stop and edit my recent photos on my laptop as it’s a time-consuming job and it appeared to be a better use of my time than sitting idly in the traffic. I foolishly thought that after 10 or 20 minutes the worst of the traffic would be cleared and then I’d drive home in peace.

Talk about stupid.

I actually had a great time playing with my photos and I’ve included a few in this post to lighten the mood somewhat….even though regular readers will have seen them before.

I wasn’t giving the traffic much thought apart from the occasional glance to see if it had improved at all.

My outlook changed however when I checked the time and it was now 11 pm! I’d been waiting a full hour and nothing had altered. I truly began to worry then – I might still be here at 2 am waiting for it to clear. It might be dawn before I get home.

I decided I needed to get back into the inching traffic (if they’d let me) and make my way home even if it was painfully slow.

To cut a long story short I eventually got home at midnight and after a trip that took 6 hours instead of 3, I did my usual collapsing in a heap and breathing a sigh of relief. It sure was good to be out of that car. Again I was reminded of Top Gear. If you are going to be stuck in such awful traffic why not be in a very comfy car with all the mod cons. Makes sense.

The next morning I awake to find the sun shining in a wonderful blue sky, the blackbirds singing and a garden full of blossoms. It doesn’t get much better than this. I am due to have dinner in London with some old friends but decide to cancel – I’m a bit dubious about using public transport at night by myself. It’s mainly the return trip on the tube that bothers me. Maybe if I lived here I would get used to the idea but I’d rather visit them next week during the day on my way to stay with my friend Angela.

It disturbed me a little when I heard a news item a couple of days ago about people being assaulted on the tube as well as one about people impersonating taxi drivers who rob and/or assault passengers so I decided to stick to daytime travel when I was on my own.

The other distressing news is the outbreak of Swine Flu. When I first heard about it I contemplated flying back home to Australia on the next available flight. The problem is, of course, that the flight itself can put you at risk if there’s a carrier on board. In the end I decided to stay put and take my chances – and buy a face mask as soon as I possible. I was a bit slack in this regard and 2 days later there wasn’t a face mask to be had for love nor money. I took to carrying vast quantities of tissues everywhere with me and avoiding touching any public surfaces with my bare hands. It’s dreadful in the underground where people cough and sneeze right in your face and make NO attempt to stop the spray of moisture from hitting you.

If I so much as heard a cough or sneeze I’d run a mile, change carriages or put a big wad of tissues up to my face. It’s amazing how ignorant people are these days about the spread of infection. I remember when I was at school that it was a significant part of our education – the simple precautions to take to reduce the spread of infection such as covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough, wash your hands regularly especially before eating – nothing too onerous and it sure isn’t rocket science but how many people do it conscientiously? I can understand that younger people didn’t have it drummed into them the way my age group did so they have some excuse…but what about people my age? We know better…we should be leading by good example rather than being too darn lazy to do the right thing.

Oops! Bit of a rant eh? Must be getting tired. I’d better finish off now and break for a cuppa.

Apologies for my absence!

Phew!  Back on the internet at last!

I’ve had a security issue with my computer and had to avoid the net since coming home after my Christmas holiday. Apologies for the silence but I should be able to resume normal transmission from today onwards.

I have an enormous amount of catching-up to do so better make a start. As well as reading all your posts there’s the $#@* spam  to be gone through  to sift out any poor innocent souls who may have been inadvertently turfed out into the spam folder.

I’ll stop complaining NOW and set to work. Hope you have all had a satisfying start to the year and that life is treating you well.
